It's pot luck though that determines that, not the Xv API.

The api doesn't say "RGB isn't a hardware overlay" and, on a card like 
the Voodoo3 for example, it can do RGB into hardware overlay.

Picking RGB instead of YUV is a pixel format decision not a decision as 
to where the pixels are sent...(even though most current drivers put 
RGB into the onscreen buffer you can't rely on that)
