Sorry for asking the question, I think I found the answer:
I needed "libXv.a". I got it from "Xprog.tgz", from
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.0.2/binaries/Linux-ix86-glibc22/
It seems to link and work, or at least XvQueryExtension works.
