I think a useful compromise would be to display a frame about every 1-2 seconds, so I can see when to stop recording from TV. Can it be done without dropping frames in the recorded file?
Yes but not *easily*; one has to do grab and display in parallel, which means threads. Try xawtv, it *looks* like it can gran 25fps and maintain a reasonably realtime display simultaneously.
