log of every tape and the time code of sequences used so that if I
need to go back to an old tape for any reason to edit an existing
video, I know where everything is located and don't have to search
manually. It's a good habit to keep a log book/file. Also keeping the
FCP project files which contains your project info.
I usually keep recent projects (1-6 months) on my hard drive. Less
recent projects (6-18 months) on my raid drive and the rest are saved
on DVD or back to tape. Since I only import clips that I need to my
computer, I can usually zip them into small enough files that can fit
on a DVD. I use the media manager a lot after a project is done so
that it erases footage I haven't used from my hard drive - freeing up
space - and only keeps the footage I have used in my project.
I used to have a Lacie Drive, but didn't want to start chaining
Lacies, so I opted to get an external raid drive that's working nicely
in archiving my footage. That's always an option. But keeping all your
original tapes (in a cool dark place) with log files is always a sure
back-up.
