use on the group. It's not often people on the group get this
technical.
I have a question about this though that I think might be one a lot of
people might have. I started my blog out using blogger.com and that's
where it STILL is unfortunately. Blogger only supports an Atom feed.
Since my blog was up a long time before I created a feedburner feed I
still have thousands of hits to my old atom feed a day. So the question
is, what happens when I redirect my Atom feed to feedburner since my
feedburner feed is RSS 2.0. Should I redirect it at all?
Secondly, my feedburner feed is outstripping my blog in google rank,
not badly, but it's becoming an annoyance. How does this tip of
redirecting the feed url from my server change this. Certainly I can no
longer change those who are pointing to feedburner already, secondly
feedburner is submitting all sorts of pings and meta data to yahoo and
other search engines on my behalf and telling those search engines that
it is the proper feed url. I can't change that either.
In the end I have to agree with Andrew Barron. The one thing that would
fix the whole issue would be for feedburner to have a feature to
publish your feedburner feed to your own url, this not only as an
anti-lockin' measure, but as a much needed feature to give individuals
the control they need to manage their feeds. Obviously, based on this
thread, this is a much needed feature.
On a side note the real annoyance for me is me competing on search
engines with blog directories whom are republishing my data in its
entirety (as they are doing with others blogs), and who are outranking
me on google. Most are very good about pointing people my way, back to
the original post that is, but I just about flipped out when I did a
search for a specific blog post yesterday and found ODEO buried me on
google, and that while they had reposted all my data they'd bastardized
my metadata (strike one) and horror of horrors had removed any link
back to the original post! (UN F'N EXCUSEABLE!) Yeah, I'm flipping
pissed as all hell, they even were accepting comments on my behalf.
(strike 3!) Did I mention I'm still pissed as hell. Odeo has managed to
race right past all propriety and etiquette and straight into just
plain illegalities. I imagine I'll make a post about it here later when
I'm calmed down a little.
