dissection and subgenrefication of cultures. It seems to be what
happens---in art, in music (take electronic music which started with a
couple subgenres like techno and house which then further subgenrefied
into minimal, tribal, tech, micro, happy hardcore, ambient, trance,
goa trance, etc.)
On one hand, this is beneficial to those who seek out a particular
thing, for the sake of commerce/entertainment, etc. Each of those
subgenres can start up their own mailing list and discuss what is
micro or not, what is quality micro or not, make fun of other genres,
and further define these things. When going to a bookstore or record
store, these subgenres can really help you find what you're looking
for. When searching online for specifically art vlogs, or science
vlogs, or action figure vlogs, a person who is interested in only that
can find it more easily and communicate with others who share the
singular passion for that. The same can be true of ethnic groups:
defining ourselves as Norwegians or left-handed Lithuanians with
outtie belly buttons can help us further a political cause or protect
ourselves from discrimination or, even worse, ethnic cleansing. This
is the act of the critical mind and intellect, which I'm probably
using right now. Can be useful! But it can also divide us, cause
dispute, hinder openness and tolerance.
On the other hand, there's the idea of seeing each other as humans
without the need to dissect and sub-categorize, as musicians without
the need to criticize, as just vloggers. This is the act of the heart,
and that's what I've seen a lot of out there in people's comments to
each other. In that moment, there are no subgenres, no commerce, just
person to person communication. With this attitude there can't ever be
any ethnic cleansing, no wars between art vloggers and journal
vloggers and commerce vloggers and outtie bellybuttoned pierced nipple
vegan Canadian vloggers.
How I got ethnic cleansing and vlogging, I have no idea.
