We completely agree-- our goal for DTV is to play
whatever file format you throw at it, because nobody
(whether you're publishing or watching) wants to worry
about that stuff. We just wanted people to see DTV in
action sooner rather than later, so we could start
getting feedback.
So while the Mac beta just uses Quicktime 7, the
Windows version coming out in a few weeks will embed
the open source video player VLC. Then we'll work on
embedding WMV, Flash, and Real--and VLC on Mac.
Patent unencumbered codecs like Theora are the best
thing for the future, so we're intent on supporting
those too. Then once open source video players and
publishing tools take the lead we can start to
recommend Theora, etc to publishers. But that's a
ways off still :)
