NTSC is 640 x 480 at 60hz (640 horizontal pixels, 480 vertical)
PAL is 720 x 576 at 50hz, at least where I live. There seem to be other standards I don't know about.
HDTV might be 1280 x 720 (720p) or 1920 x 1080 (1080i)

I guess this could explain the faster transition to HDTV in the US, but I don't really know. Anyway, most HDTV-capable LCD-panels I see for sale are like 13xx*800, 1024*1024, 1280*768 and 1280*800, etc, which means that they need to scale the picture somewhat.

Actually, NTSC resolution for television is 720x480.
That's HDTV. Scroll down to " resolution".
