Yes, this is absolutely true. You need the mpeg-2 component installed
in order to handle mpeg-2 files properly. With it, you can import
mpeg-2 files into final cut and edit them -- no problem, no need to
demux (which is quite something, considering only one out of four
frames is actually a real frame!) Without that component, you are in a
jam, and I think you can't even really make DVDs properly. That fact
drives me nuts at my university when the people who install the
software on all the editing stations don't know what they are doing and
don't install either the mpeg-2 component or quicktime pro (even though
both are paid for in the Final Cut licenses they have). I've designed
whole classes worth of curriculum depending on these tools, only to
find out the machines aren't equipped... Also in Dec 2003 / Jan 2004
the mpeg-2 component suddenly expired without any notice. I think Apple
forgot they'd put a timer on the think, and I was editing late into the
night on a huge deadline, cutting DV and raw mpeg-2 footage together
with no problem (final cut is really sweet) -- but suddenly all my
mpeg-2 files disappeared. I could not figure it out -- until several
days later scanning the web, I found people in an uproar. Apple
released a new version / a patch within a week or two and we were all
back up and running. That's when i really began to understand that
there's this little thing that gets installed with DVD Studio Pro
that's kind of important if you are using mpeg-2 footage.
