Hiya,
I had high hopes of loading up my video last week, but my editing
machine went kablooey. I am finally ready to put the darn thing
online. I edited the 4 minute project on a PC with the Matrox 2000 card
along with Premiere. Creating the WMV version of the project was no
problem since that's built into the Matrox software. Creating something
for Quicktime users was a bit more of a bugaboo.
I know that there are several new QT codecs that people like, but
because of the nature of what I'm doing I want to have pretty broad
backward compatibility. I elected to create an MP4 as most folks with
QT should be able to play that back, right? How long ago was MP4
implemented into QT? Or should I be using some flavor of straight
Quicktime if I want this to be mega-compatible?
I decided to create the MP4 via Avid Free DV's Quicktime output.
Through some monkeying around I found some good options that yielded a
15 meg file. My concern is that even with broadband speeds, perhaps
the filesize of my video blog is too big. What do you guys think? I'm
not sure how far I'll be able to compress the video as my content is
mostly going to be old home movies. High compression can benefit video
of a talking head,but given the frenetic nature of home movies I'm not
sure how far to push the compression.
Here are the settings I ended up using in Avid Free DV. Can anyone
out there make any recommendations to help me get the filesize down?
compressor: mpeg-4
quality: medium - 65
frame rate - 15
keyframe - 5
bitrate - 375
size 320 x 240
prepare for streaming
fast start
The options I probably least understood were the audio compressor
choices. I did a lot of video compressing an eternity ago, and I've got
to say that the choices in that menu were pretty staggering compared to
what I've seen before. :) My vlog will regularly have music and voice
and I'd like to preserve the quality as much as I can. This time around
I used "IMA 4:1" at 24khz in stereo and I got results that I'm happy
with. Is there another compressor I can use to knock the filesize down
while retaining much of the quality?
I've read the 3ivx tutorials, but I'm not sure if I can implement
this scheme with my current version of Premiere. I do plan on upgrading
the editing machine in a couple of weeks and so will have a new editing
card, and the newest version of Premiere. I'm hoping that this helps
squash all of these crazy codec problems I've been having. If 3ivx is
the way to do this best, I'll do it - of if I have to buy QT pro that's
fine too. It's just that free is SO much better. :)
