this is why qt 6 was delayed. they haggled a long time over the 
licencing of MPEG4. This is one of the reasons why QT pro costs money 
- mpeg4 is an international standard administered by an international 
body. You must purchase a licence to use it (just like most other 
similar standards) and the licence you get with QT pro is limited 
(like most other standards...).

This doesn't make it a proprietary format - anyone one can buy a 
licence to make content for it - but it definitely is not open source.
