I wouldn't mind paying something. I pay for
an account on Flickr, and don't begrudge them the money. I would hate to
have it priced out of my ability to pay, though. A $30/year fee (isn't
that what Flickr is?) seems reasonable. I've been surprised, to tell you
the truth, at how much there IS out there that is free. as you say, people
do need to live and food to eat. Fotolog charged by the month and I didn't
mind paying that until the quality took a nosedive, then it became throwing good
money after bad.
