Windows Movie Maker has some seriously cool features coming in Windows Vista (not that it helps right now) and better stability. Still, I don't think Microsoft ever intends it to compete directly with the broader market of video editors the way Apple effectively lifted the finger to Adobe and Avid with Final Cut Pro. One very natural upgrade path when you outgrow WMM2 is to use Premiere Elements. It's got most of the Premiere Pro features for about $100 (big missing feature is HD, which is a non-feature for most people at this point).
