Its most likely that theres plenty of other ways to create ipod
compatibl video, without using quicktime 7. AS I said previously, we
have to wait till someones got a real device to test on, but in
theory, according to the tech specs that Apple released, other
mpeg4/h264 encoders should work.

If people have an alternative encoder that can create h264 or mpeg4,
you should be ok as long as you adhere to the resolution, bitrate and
audio format stuff that apple has specified. The complication that I
refered to yesterday, is to do with profiles.

With mpeg4 and h264, there are a range of different profiles which
define what features the decoder is capable of supporting. Some
advanced decoding features will only be available with certain
computer software decoders/encoders, and some hardware devices will
only support simpler stuff.

What this means, is that if you encode using certain options, you may
create a mpeg4 or h264 video that cannot be played back on the ipod.

When encoding to H264, you need to make sure your encoder is just
using stuff supported in the profile called 'baseline', not main or
advanced profiles.

When encoding to mpeg4, you need to make sure you encode to stuff that
meets the 'simple profile' mpeg 4 spec.

Specific example:

If you encode using 3ivx, and you select the advanced option 'MPEG
Quantizer (ASP)' then your footage wont conform to the simple profile.
It will be ASP, which is advanced simple profile, and isnt shown as
being supported on the ipod.

Im hoping that most encoders stick to Simple Profile for mpeg4 and
Baseline for h264, and then nobody needs to worry about this stuff I
am waffling about.

Heres another example:

ffmpeg based encoders include options about whether to use B-frames.
Apparently (im still learnign about this stuff), baseline h264 does
not support b-frames. So if you use an encoder like that to make ipod
h264 files, you need to avoid certain options to ensure compliance.
