In windows the easiest way is to open the file in a player.

in Windows Media Player (for WMVs) you can then go to File->Properties
in QuickTime Player (for MOVs and others) you can hit cntrl-i

(There are ways to make WMVs display this information within the file directory view but it's dependant on folder settings and may require customizing the view, etc etc etc ... even then the info wont show up for MOVs ... so the easiest way is to just play them and view the file properties from the player in one of the two above methods.)
