Its not strictly necessary.  .mov and .mp4 should still work fine on a
video ipod, so long as the contain video & audio encoded to the right
specifications.

I think apple just decided to have the quicktime ipod export option
use the extension m4v, because that extension isnt so common, and so
apple made itunes the default app for opening .m4v files. 

In making it much more likely that double clicking a mp4 file will
make it open in itunes rather than quicktime or some other app, they
have also made things confusing because people dont know what this m4v
stuff is. And also strictly speaking the term m4v should mean a mpeg 4
video stream, no audio, but thats not how apple are using the term.

Im pretty sure .m4v is just the same as .mp4, if you make a .m4v in
quicktime, rename it to .mp4 and put it on the web, it works.

Im happy to see stories are now coming in that show plenty of existing
videoblogs (eg using 3ivx) are playing on the ipod.
