I think Andrew was comparing Rocketboom to Boing Boing not visually,
but content-wise. RB is essentially a link blog… or a link videoblog
rather. On the days we are doing news (which is the majority of the
time) we are just pointing out stories and linking to them. We dig up
what we find to be interesting around the web (and we believe we have
similar taste to sites such as Boing Boing, hence the example) and
send our viewers to those sites.

Additionally, unlike TV where the host is completely unavailable to
his or her audience, I am there listening and emailing with viewers. I
also say literally whatever I want without any kind of sensor, because
I don't have to answer to conservative advertisers. As for "hate
speech"… umm… I wouldn't be doing that anyway, so yeah, maybe I can't
do ANYTHING, but I can do anything I'd want to do.

What I've come to understand from this first year of RB is that a
video blog "show" audience wants to get to know the host, and a lot of
RB watchers tell me they feel a connection to me, because I share more
of myself than a TV host. Sure, it's not a personal videoblog, but
it's still a lot more personal than television. I think it's one of
the things that separate us from TV. Another thing is that RB doesn't
dumb down information. Unlike most of TV, we assume our audience is
smart, not stupid. We don't work to make sure EVERYONE "gets it"…we
don't play to the lowest common denominator. Of course, not all of TV
plays dumb, but lots of it does.

We also incorporate our audience a lot more than TV. Our audience
sends in videos and stories, and many, many of them we use (and place
a "thank you" link to give credit). If ever we mess up a fact, you can
be sure we'll be notified within minutes after the episode is posted
by an attentive viewer. Sure, people write in to the TV shows they
watch, but do they ever get a response? Usually not.

We make changes! We take the blame when we screw up! We listen!

RB is truly a collaborative effort with our audience. They really work
with us to steer the show. Many folks didn't like Tom Delay's mugshot
on Monday… so you know what? We showed some alternative versions on
Tuesday… that kind of thing. Like I said before, we really, really
listen… something I think TV fails to do miserably.

I am not trying to say we don't have anything in common with TV,
that'd be an idiotic claim. What I am saying is that RB is not just
IPTV, even without the links and comments. All new media borrows from
the old, but RB definitely is new media.

As for The Public Eye, your right Tomas, let's give `em a break 
I'm excited to see more "shows" popping up.
