There is a simple solution to this. Open the .mp3 in QuickTime Pro and then export as .aif.
Us the resulting .aif file in Final Cut Pro. Never use .mp3 files. This works the majority of the time. If you ever have an .mp3 to .aif conversion provide poor results, export the .aif to .mov.
