Hi Jake,

I have to wonder about the iSight's I purchased.  We have two iSight's on our powerbooks, a Creative WebCam on one of the PC's and a no-named freebee from the mid 90's that came free with earthlink.  The Creative was way cheaper than the iSight and the image quality is visibly better with the Creative.  The freebee quality is as good as the iSight.  I have always been suprised at iSight quality, given what i also felt was a high price.  Also, the iSight fails in many apps after prolonged use (it seems to just need to be plugged in and out from time to time) and many times an app will not recognise it unless it is plugged and unplugged.  this includes iChat and iMovie.  A major portion of the iSight cost must be to cover apples beautiful but horribly wasteful packaging.

fyi,
markus

I just bought a Creative webcam that said on the box it was only
windows compatiblel. Being the cocksure mac owner I am, I figured it
would just work anyway. It very much did not, and I haven't found a
lot of cameras that DID say they were compatible with OSX, other than
the obviously overpriced iSight. What webcams are the mac users here
using? I know you can just plug in your firewire, but I'm thinking of
buying them for another project I am doing where I would have to
install them in various places, which may be PC, might be mac, but I
want to at least do the development on my computer using the same
camera I install on PCs. Am I out of luck?

The iSight is most definitely not overpriced. It's got the best image of any
Webcam on the market and well worth the extra dollars over Creative or
Logitech. iSight also works with PCs, making it compatible for what you want
to do.

One option before you give up on the Creative is to try the USB Webcam
drivers from sourceforge:
http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/

Their list of supported cams is hosed at the moment, but it might work.
