Any way, Get a Mac, it's the best and easiest computer you do videoing on, and it's industry standard so when you graduate you will have all the experience needed to continue using apple in your chosen line of work. As for spending your grant, hmmm, stay cheep, try and try to get things like lights and tripods for as cheep as possible, going for the expensive stuff will leave you out of pocket. I managed to get my first tripod out of a skip(trashcan) and used it on most of work to date, yesterday, with a little money that I had lying around bought my first store bought tripod for only £24.99. Lighting I get from DIY or hardware stores, or check out garage sales, people change their minds about security so with a little electrical expertise you might be able to pick up a bargain. A good little tool is the steadycam, again from the hardware store, I spent about £15 getting the bits together and assembled one, a good site to visit is this one http://littlegreatideas.com/steadycam/ it will show you how to make one for about $15, you will need a drill, a wrench and a screwdriver and a vice. And as for other things, get yourself a little 2.1megapixel digital camera, and have a go at stopmotion. Hope this will help you.
