Showing your copy to friends is different that publishing something (you have no right to publish) to a world-wide audience. I'm pretty sure buying a copy of the NYT does not grant you redistribution/republishing rights. I can invite friends over to listen to some music, or watch a movie, but do you think I can get away with publishing the music or movies on the web that I do not have the right to publish?
