I think you may be right about the British/American thing, here. I feel pretty confident saying that in the US (or, I guess, at least in NYC...a teeny chunk of the US) iPods are directly inferred by the term "podcast". Once the "pod-" is attached to anything, it's no longer perceived as a generic term, although someone pointed out (I don't remember who) that POD is actually an acronym. "Podcasting" may be an easier word for people to digest, but I feel like it's not quite a blanket term yet. It's no kleenex. Or band-aid. Or ketchup.
