It's really quite good, and when using FCP I often find myself annoyed at the features I expect from Vegas which it doesn't support.
Also, for editing something with a shorter length, it's actually better.

My opinion would be, if you are a beginner, to use Windows Movie Maker
if you dont want to spend any money. Adobe Premiere Elements if you
want to stay under $100.
More advanced...Adobe Premiere.
