How are thumbnails chosen for feeds? Are they
chosen by the person creating the feed like we do while making a
screencapture on a Mac for our vlog? Or is it the first frame of a
feed?
No thumbnail may be a wee bit of overkill.
Why not thumbnails for porn feeds that aren't pornographic themselves?
Pornography is tedious because there is so much of it and very little than any
specific person enjoys.
A non-porno thumbnail would show you if the film
featured (1) hetero or homo sex (2) blonds or Latinos of Asians (3) thin and
anemic or heavy and hefty, etc. Couldn't you set "standards for
thumbnails" that would work out for everyone's benefit?
Glad to see you attempting to err on the side of
not censoring.

Subject: [videoblogging] Re: Porn on
mefeedia??
Hey Jay, yes, I noticed it as well. It was inevitable, I
am actually surprised it took this long..
So here's the plan we
have, for now. In a few months we'll probably add more features. I have
given this some thought over the past months, and there is a balance: I
want mefeedia to be an open directory, which means we don't censor feeds
(except in extreme cases of hate speach and such...), not even porn. The
best example of a feed I don't want to censor is Richard's (MAdge
Weinstein), which is sometimes very good, and a great videoblog, but also
could be called pretty nasty porn, sometimes.
So: if we don't want
to censor, but we do want to protect, what do we do?
While surfing
Mefeedia, the shock I get is from seeing the thumbnails. It's just not nice
to see a thumbnail of some naked guy if you're not expecting it. Bad
experience.
So I have decided to, for porn feeds, *not* to show
thumbnails in the website. The feeds are still there, you can still
subscribe to them. But the pictures are hidden: so you can browse the
website and you won't see any naked people.
I think that's a good
first step. It's a careful step. I am very conscious of not wanting to
censor people's feeds. But I think this will help. It should be live in
about a week.
Any comments? Peter
