But, before you spend $200 on a microphone, make sure you have a  
quiet place to record.  You might spend the cash only to find that  
your new microphone just picks up more of your air conditioner,  
refrigerator, noisy neighbor, or your computer's hard drives and fans!

One easy work around is to buy enough cable to run the mic into your  
closet -- all the clothes in there can really make for a nice  
recording environment, and may shield from some of the noise you pick  
up out in the open part of your room.
