Your embedded player advise is sound and certainly will deal with some of the quicktime issues. But I really think your assumption about how many PCs have quicktime installed already is wrong, theres a lot that dont.
iTunes and the ipod help, they have certainly gotten quicktime onto a lot more PCs, and the HP computers Ive been buying for work came with itunes/quicktime pre-installed. But apparently this deal will end soon, HP dont want to renew the agreement or something. Quicktime 6 annoyed a lot of people by putting an icon in the taskbar, and with the stupid 'buy quicktime pro now/later' popups. These mistakes are partly gone now, but Quicktime7 PC instability on some peoples systems has created new reasons for Windows users to hate Quicktime. Fullscreen being a Pro feature is still laughable to me and is another reason I dont think Apple are all that different to Microsoft really, Apple just have better PR, better physical styling, more journalists onside, and quite a nice OS.
