The only thing I could add to this is to try to avoid getting it transfered to DVD or using hardware that encodes it to mpeg1 or mpeg2. Using those formats will mean you'll have to take an additional step of converting the new video to DV so you can edit it. I'd stick with something that gave you DV video. I have an old Sony Digital 8 camera with analog imputs. I used it to "digitize" about 25 hours of VHS tape back when I bought it in '99. It still comes in handy every once in a while.
