Yeah, you can download .mov files to your ipod as long as they are encoded with the correct MP4 or H.264 settings.
Yes, .movs can have all sorts of formats inside them. The drawbacks of using .mp4 on your blog, so far as I can tell, is simply that some computers out there (at leas in the windows side of things) still get confused with how to deal with it. I have the latest iTunes on my PCs and yet each still handles mp4s differently ... and painfully in at least one case. This problem is however getting better all the time. At the moment my preference is to provide a .mov that is encoded for the iPod. All of my computers see .mov and know what to do with it. QuickTime.
