The Internet Archive is giving us free hosting, but we dont know for ho w long or if/when the service will scale with new vlog content.
As it is right now, the user experience for viewing video hosted by the IA is poor. Most videos do not load quickly or at all at first attempt.
Many wont try a second time.... that's a problem.
This may be improved soon, but it may get worse especially if vlogs start appearing in iTunes and when FireANT gets more popular.
The result is what I call the vlog clog. And the IA is going to strain unless they beef up their systems to cater to On Demand Video services.
What are the alternatives? What would you pay to get unlimited hosting services without much of a bottleneck problem? $10 - $15 per month?
Would it be logical to discuss some sort of community vlog hosting fund? How many vloggers and at what cost per month would give us unlimited bandwidth and storage?
Can we trust a body to manage the fund and the hosting service?
Would this be a way to help our own cause without us all individually using commercial hosting services, but instead collectively contribute to a premium service that would sustain this group for x months/years ?
Can we get sponsors/donors/patrons/grants to also contribute money into the vlog host fund, supporting open media revolution?
We can use http://dijjer.org/ to help keep bandwidth costs low. Yes, dijjer, as i mentioned here before, still seems like something we should all be looking into.
I encourage everyone to do so.
Is this something we should be talking about as a group? Are we cohesive enough?
I have not thought this through.... it just occurred to me that it *might* make some sense.
And my experiences of late with IA hosted media has been very poor. I want to fix that experience.
