OK, so here's what's happening for me:

When I "upgraded" to iLife 06, iMovie started acting very buggy, with
the Ken Burns problem, and previews being completely jittery and all
kinds of weirdness. Most disturbing, however, has been a problem with
titles and transitions. Titles and transitions don't work. Sure, I can
apply them, but the audio gets totally fubar'd, and even restoring the
original clip doesn't always fix that. I have no plug-ins installed on
QT or iMovie.

In the preview/playback problem, there's almost a "pulse" of
jitteryness, where every few seconds will suddenly freeze the audio or
video or both. I thought this might be a problem with editing from an
external hard drive, but it happens locally as well. This carries over
to playback in QuickTime and of course when I export to upload my
vlogs, they come out all screwed up.

I hoped that updating to 6.01 would fix *something*. It didn't. I
checked the Apple website-- official support has no information, but
the discussion groups do. Unfortunately, the standard fix for the
titles/transition audio problem (which the discussion groups claim has
been there since iMovie 4) is to extract the audio before or after
applying the transition or title. This does not seem to fix the
problem for me.

I'm getting VERY frustrated with this. I'm on a 12" Powerbook G4,
which I don't think is underpowered for editing video, when I've been
doing that just fine for the last couple of years.

I'm thinking I'm just going to post these crappy videos as they are
with a note that viewers can thank Apple for iMovie 06 and for making
a good product suddenly unusable. I can say with confidence that I'm
less enthusiastic about talking up iMovie 06 in the book, that's for
sure. I mean, I thought iDVD was buggy, but iMovie is just... gah. You
can't even do anything with it anymore.

If anyone has advice, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise, I guess I just
needed to vent.
