(Sorry for getting off topic but....)

I wonder what algorithm they're using to calculate this.

Perhaps something as simple as the total number of "hits" for a tag from some date in the past up to "now".  (Or maybe it's a little more complex than that... perhaps with some weighting, dampening, or "memory" built into the algorithm.)
