I'm guessing your friend is using a Mac, so you can use ffmpegX.  (Never used it myself though... don't have a Mac.)
http://homepage.mac.com/major4/http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/ffmpegx.html(Unlike FFmpeg) I don't think this is Free and Open Source software though, unfortunately.  (I think it's shareware.)
