I still use 3ivx - it's pretty good - not quite as good as h.264 but it plays with Qt 6, plays well on older computers, and it's much faster than h.264 at encoding. I have a tutorial for it on Freevlog: <URL: http://freevlog.org/wordpress/index.php/2005/10/23/compress-for-the-web-with-3ivx/ >
The tutorial goes through using single pass encoding. There is a workaround for doing dual pass on Mac OS 10.4. What you have to do is, once the first pass is complete, open up your Preference folder (USER > LIBRARY > PREFERENCES) and look for the file 3ivx2pass.log. It should be near the top of the directory. Just drag it to your desktop momentarily. Then go back and set up the second pass. Just before you click Save, go back and replace the new log file in your preferences with the one you put on your desktop. The click save and your second pass will work just fine.
Let me know if you have any questions. I make all my videos like that.

Perhaps my question was unclear - I'm aware of VLC
and have many ways of playing back a variety of formats
on my computer. The issue I'm having is more about making
my videos viewable to the most people - Users might be at a
library computer and unable to download or install applications
or using an old iMac... Basically I get comments fairly
regularily that say people can't see the image, or
worse - nothing at all.
So does anyone know of compression codecs (or settings)
that look good, create small files via Quicktime AND can
be viewed on old systems?

it seems that many people can't watch the video - older computers I
guess. I've done some vids with h.263, I can't seem to use 3ivx through
Tiger - can anyone help me with tips on compression that's good for the
majority of computer users?
