record straight. I was the Maysles Films, Inc. associate who, in the
production of the film, "Gimmer Shelter" (not Helter Skelter),
personally handled the analysis of the film containing the scene of the
stabbing. At no time did it ever leave my physical possession. I took
it to the Time-Life photo lab and used the same person and the same
equipment (only 16mm rather than 8mm) that did the analysis of the
Zapruder film of the JFK assassination. This was the arrangement we
negotiated with the D.A. in California. It was totally impartial and,
on our part, without any evaluation, manipulation, or distortion of the
film. We were able to keep the original 16mm for our production and we
turned over the 35mm frame-by-frame copy.
As I remember it, there was some pressure to turn over the original
material. We did not simply comply with the initial request to turn over
the original film, but negotiated a compromise based on mutual trust and
respect. We had our movie and they had their trial.
I am certainly not advocating what we did in the case of the Altamont
incident as a solution to Josh Wolf's case. I am just providing the
data since it was brought up.
