As an American who considers both Paul K. and Paul R. to be friends, I'd like to say a few things.
First, from the fall of France in June 1940 until December 1941, when the Soviet Union gave Germany its first military defeat and the United States entered the war, Britain and Britain alone held off both the German and Japanese fascist war machines.
Ponder this: If England had been defeated or signed an armistice during that time the United States would not have been able to fight in Europe. Commonwealth countries such as Canada and Newfoundland most likely would stay allied with England.
Second, even though Britain was an imperialistic empire (and my Irish ancestors certainly knew that) at the end of the Second World War those days were over. Within a decade the Empire folded. The war left Britain all but bankrupt and more Brits died in the war than Americans.
We owe Britain a major Thank You! If it wasn't for them we might be all speaking German. We might also take a lesson from history and figure out how we are going to pay for the expansion of the American Empire under George Bush.
All the best,
Tom
