no, the vhs isn't the same quality, it's an analogue format. General advice Paul is that you should always try and digitize analogue material with the best analgoue to digital convertor you have (the bit that turns the wobbly video voltage signal into crisp on/off digital signal) and minimize the amount of information compression ( e.g. miniDV compresses less than MPEG).
I don't know how bad your DV camera is?  But any prosumer camera will capture more information from the VHS than something that encodes in MPEG, and the more information you have the better you can work with it/recompress it afterwards.

If there is a better way, especially for mac I would like to hear it.
