H264 or MP4 encoded Quicktime files or MP4 files with AAC audio are
pretty much the only video formats that the iPod will play back.
Other portable players often require different codecs. MP4 seems to
be somewhat close to a universal standard. But I'm not sure that
there is one perfect universal format that will play on every
portable video device. But if you want to get to the big two, the
PSP and the iPod then MP4 is the way to go.
