<sigh> I don't know what it is about the Internet that makes people assume the worst and never give benefit of the doubt. When I used to answer the webmaster email address for Roxio, I was amazed at the virulent mails I sometimes got from people assuming that the company was out to screw them, I personally didn't give a damn, my mother slept with donkeys, etc. etc. - all before I had even had a chance to respond or otherwise!
It's true that occasionally this group has been spammed or otherwise advertised to, and that email addresses published in the group have been harvested and abused by the unscrupulous.
