Yeah this is the sort of phenomenon that disturbs me about many youtube comments.
Ive always been fairly sure its mostly teenage people, everytime I read what couldnt quite be called 'conversations' there, there is an awful lot of behaviour that seems like genuine adolescents clumsily stomping around, as opposed to the sometimes hard to distinguish 'adults or drunk people behaving like kids'. I remember being verbally bullied at school for years with taunts of gay etc, for years before I had any idea what the terms even meant, having to deal with that crap for years before even using my genitals for anything interesting at all. So, such comments, and the sheer number of them, are certainly an offputting phenomenon. And we cant tell these people to grow up, time has to take its course, and then of course there will always be more. When we become adults we hopefully dont have to deal with this stuff on a regular basis, and generally arent used to getting crude and ill considered comments from kids & teenagers. But on parts of the net, especially social networking sites with a critical mass of other youngsters present, this stuff is back to haunt us. When we become adults, we are used to assuming that any other adult who uses such terms of abuse are proper homophobes or complete braingone's. Wheras a good chunk of the youngsters using such abuse are doing it because its the norm within their group, many of them wont think twice about what its supposed to mean and any wider implications. Mond you Im getting old now, losing touch with the current slang used by kids, and theres the international aspect. Maybe some words that are referencing homosecuals are being used much more broadly, instead of words like crap. If so, this is worrying in itself as it makes more very negative connections between sexual orientation and something being 'bad'. What clever ways are there to counteract this phenomenon, is it at all possible? Oh save me from the adolesconet, it was bad enough having to deal with teenagers when I was one!
