This is a question for the seriously technical among you - I don't
understand enough to know if this is an incredibly stupid question -
but is it not possible for some open source genius to work on open
source import/export codecs for FCP or for Premiere, for unsupported
formats? Or is it all too locked up in proprietary systems? Or is
it too complex? On the one hand, I've just been reading on message
boards how excited everyone is getting about AVCHD as a high-quality,
high-compression, low data-rate format, but that it can't be edited
until Sony/Apple/Adobe develop an official import/export codec for it
for their editing programs, which might be as much as a year away.
Any ideas on open source import/export alternatives for all
incompatible formats?

This JVC HD Everio GZ-HD7 looks promising at only probably $1500
street. I'm going to have to forget I don't like JVC brand and wonder
if we'll have import/export codecs for FCP soon. Wow.
