well, if a tally of who would be planning to attend each location was put up
on a wiki or whatever, then you would be able to choose which events are
most appealing for you to go to based on 1) location 2) cost 3) people 4)
atmosphere 5) agenda 6) features

even when everyone goes to one event, it is not possible to have a genuine
and intimate experience with everyone... or even everyone you intend to
meet.

as for cost and dedication to put on an event... that all depends on the
scope and purpose of it.  it could be a meetup in chicago for a night of
casual socializing and maybe a late-nite party/screening or something.  it
could be a half-day conference in NYC.  it could be a weekend getaway or a
week in hawaii or a trip to Europe or a weekend in Boston or LA and so on.
The cost would always be in line with the dedication and drive of the team
that organizes it.
