Cheers, havent tried watching it yet. Some people have compared the personal 'talk to the camera' type videoblogging with the BC TV program 'Video Nation' which encouraged people to keep 'video diaries' which were usually a few minutes long, and were then shown on TV. This started in the early 90's I guess so it predated the mass use of the web in general and vlogging. I havent seen all that many of tehm over the years, but the ones I did see were usually pretty personal and felt similar to the personal connection that vlogging can give, in some ways, but not in others (eg no comments). They were/are mostly fairly serious and not 'woo look im on tv' type stuff.
Indeed though I hate to say it, for me they often succeed in providing that personal thing that vlogging promises, and yet that I see relatively little of these days, outside some corners of youtube. Perhaps because people are not producing lots and lots of videos for tv nation, they try to tel their life story i one video, and this is all I mean, I dunno really. Anyway these days its on the web too, so people can comment and browse archives, dont know if it works internationally and its mostly still using realvideo not flash, but check it out if you can: http://www.bbc.co.uk/videonation/ Im guessing the ITV stuff will seem more contrived and distant by comparison, if its more like micro fly-on-the-wall documentaries that have been heavily edited in the usual ways, but I will need to go see now to be sure, cheers for posting about it.
