The only "strip" I know about it is in Vegas. What area was your
friend talking about?

LA is very spread out. There are nice areas within blocks of "skeezy"
areas (as Gena put it). There are some VERY nice areas, too. Don't
feel limited to hotels in Hollywood or the direct vicinity of AFI.
Keep in mind there's a Metro stop near the AFI campus. Public
transportation isn't ideal in LA, but it works.

Also, you can probably get a good deal on a weekend car rental -- just
don't get it at the airport. Take the Flyaway from LAX -- it's super
cheap and I've done it before. You might spend $80 on the car and save
$200 on a hotel. Plus you don't have to deal with taxis and you can
pick which part of town to stay in.
