That sounds so worthwhile - my sister refuses to fly because of the environmental implications.
Just a thought for funding - if you work out which trains/boats you would use for the trip, why not try approaching the companies to sponsor/fund you? Would be great PR from their point of view and your small budget would only be a drop in the ocean (excuse the pun...) Good luck :)
