I would advise finding a friendly local geek who will take apart the machine and replace the drive for a few pints of beer and some female company (cliche high-five, please...) Replacing the drive isn't terribly difficult if you're component savvy - the actual replacement drive will be a couple hundred bucks, but once you've got that it's a 30 minute job to pull open the casing (if you have the right screwdrivers) and swap the drives out.
