I find watermarks distracting, and they don't deter thieves one whit. But I'm a logo and branding-averse person by nature (to the point that I put sometimes put black tape over logos of stuff I wear or equipment I perform with).
If I was going to use a watermark and really believed it would do any good, I'd make sure it was visible beyond any cropping boundaries someone would use to mask it.
