hello all y'all.

my name is noneck and i've been traveling around the world for four
months and still have three more months. for background, i'm working
on a "open sourced" global documentary aptily named "on the luck of
seven." for seven months, i'm traveling around the world blogging and
vlogging my way seven topics that surround free culture. more can be
read at < http://luckofseven.com >.

first, let me tell you my getup...
- macbook (2gig core duo, 2 gb memory, upgraded 180 gig hard drive 7200 rpm)
- final cut express
- external LaCie 250Gb 7200 rpm hard drive (too heavy to cary, but
i've made it this far)
- sony HDV-A1U
- i do everything in 1080i HD. you can not dissuade me from switching.

i'm writing this email for two reasons...

one.
thoughts on bus powered hard drives for mobile HD editing...
i'm desperately looking to replace my external LaCie 250Gb 7200 rpm
hard drive that is a freakin brick and a half. the device weighs as
much as my clothing (i don't carry much) and find myself unable to lug
all of my equipment when i'd like to edit. so, i have been researching
bus powered devices. i know i can easily walk into a store and
purchase an external firewire powered (or USB) hard drive but am
limited to 5200 rpm AND i don't know if the drive speed is quick
enough for HD editing in final cut express.

if 5200 is too slow, i've also been thinking of building my own
external HD from OWC's external bus powered enclosures and grabbing a
200 gb 7200 rpm.

since i am a poor fool, i don't have money to experiment. anyone have
recommendations on mobile HD editing?

two.
thoughts on being timely...
since i'm filming my interviews as a documentary and not just a vlog,
i find myself collecting more video than i can process. so instead of
sitting down and waiting for tape content to encode, i've been
thinking of finding a second hand held digital camcorder that's
suitable for a second perspective shots and quick turning around
interviews...

there is several catches, i'd like something compatible with a mac, i
want something that is in HD, has an external mic connection, and can
rock a wide angle or fish eyed lens.

since the release of sanyo's hd1000, my jaw has dropped and my heart
throbbed. does anyone have one? how's the external sound jack? have
you used it with a wireless microphone? how's the battery life? oh,
and the lens... is it bitchin?

sanyo's hd1000 - <

ok, so if you haven't used that camera, which camera would be suitable
replacement? oh and since i'm a poor fool, do you know anyone at
sanyo?

cheers!
