Finally, after doing a lot of experimenting, I have found that Compressor( part of the Final Cut Pro Studio 2) does a pretty good job with the following settings:
H.236 for IPOD large ( which I believe is 640 x 480), and changing the extension to mp4( otherwise it is something YouTube will not take) This compression has trouble with dissolves, so I shorten the dissolve time in my videos to 15-20 frames if I use one. Straight cuts are better however. I just uploaded a 6 minute video that was almost 2G's uncompressed, but went to 78 megs compressed. Under the YouTube limit. Just my 2 cents.
