Marguerita McManus: "I was hoping for a way to edit both clips
simultaneously on the same timeline - I sure hope that makes sense."
Hi Marguerita:
Well, sort of... I presume what you're talking about doing is edit of "B"
and/or "C" roll by way of insert cuts. That is; interjecting close-ups and
other angling, without interrupting dialogue or continuity. If this is not
what you aim to do, then the following may not make much sense.
There is no way to "edit both clips simultaneously" using any non-linear
editing (NLE) system. That is an inherent impossibility of NLEs and very
likely why Vegas is shutting down the active workflow, when you attempt to
open the same file in another Vegas session. Now if your computer system is
robust enough, one can open ANOTHER Vegas file, in another Vegas session --
simultaneously -- just not the same file, at the same time. This leads to
two (2) possible "B" roll solutions, among several others may suggest.
OPTION-1: Single Session Workflow
Edit the "B" roll clips (those portions you wish to "insert" into the main
timeline) as you normally would but use another Vegas file name (such as
BRoll, for example), then render each cut as an UNCOMPRESSED (UC) AVI file
(using different render file names).
Once you've completed edits of all desired insert ("B/C" roll) cuts, open
the main project file (the one you'll use to render the finished product).
At the timeline location where you wish to insert an UC AVI ("B/C" roll cut)
file, place that file ABOVE the main timeline and mute sound of the UC AVI.
Audio from the main timeline track will remain consistent, while the
inserted image plays OVER the main timeline; this avoids the need to "SYNC
UP" sound in most cases. Repeat this process as desired.
OPTION-2: Duel Session Workflow
Open two (2) Vegas projects (perhaps under the same directory), each with
different project file names. i.e., MAIN (for the finished product) and
BROLL (for, you guessed it, "B" roll footage you intend to insert). When you
come to a place in the MAIN timeline where you'd like to insert footage,
toggle to the BROLL open Vegas session and render as in OPTION-1. Now toggle
back to the MAIN timeline and insert that UC AVI file where desired.
Remember, this method may require you to refresh the explorer view in the
MAIN timeline session -- in order to see the target UC AVI file.
Hope this helps.
