Hi Jen, I don't think of this as a cataloging question so much as a circulation/item record question.
> Consider Naxos Audiobooks version of Ulysses, unabridged > with 22 disks and a study text the size of a CD, and that fits into a CD > sleeve neatly. But the guide is 72 pages and we actually care if it is > returned with the discs, yet don't necessarily need or want to shelve it > separately. [snip] > > How does your library handle that? >Is the guide bar coded? Is it not? If it is not, how do you know if the >guide comes back or not? If it fits in the CD case, we may not bar-code it separately, but our system allows for what we call an "i-message" (item message) that states there is a supplement, so that the person doing check-in gets a prompt that there should be a supplement. If it's not there, we remind the user that they must return the item completely and do not treat it as a returned item until then. Basically, our counter staff are trained to make sure things are complete at check-in. It's similar to how we train staff to look inside the case to make sure the disk (or one of the disks) was not left by accident in a player. This is a common problem as well. Regards, Victoria Caplan HKUST Library VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
